The Main Squeeze And Organ Freeman Get Booties Shakin’ In NYC [Recap/Gallery]

Posted by admin    /    jtejzywlantv

first_imgOn Thursday night, New York City music fans were treated to a fantastic pair of performances, as five-piece funk outfit The Main Squeeze rolled into The Bowery Ballroom along with LA-based instrumental trio-on-the-rise, Organ Freeman. Weeknight shows in the City–especially on the coldest night of the season so far–often suffer attendance-wise. But fans braved the cold and came out in numbers to catch these two talented acts.Organ Freeman kicked things off with an hour-long set, skillfully performing several songs off their eponymous 2015 debut including “Go by Richard, Not by Dick”, “Verve”, and “Only If You Mean It”, as well as the hilariously-titled “Putin and I Get Along Fantastic”.The Main Squeeze took the stage for their headlining set after a brief intermission. The Squeeze was HOT on this chilly evening, from vocalist Corey Frye‘s charismatic MC-ing (and Fresh Prince theme song rap), to guitarist Max Newman’s tasteful soloing and crowd-pleasing teases (including an “Xplosive” jam), to Ben “Smiley” Silverstein dealing out thick funk grooves on the keytar and trading solos with bassist/second keyboardist Rob Walker. The band even treated the crowd to a searing cover of Pink Floyd‘s “Have A Cigar”, with Corey’s vocals giving the psychedelic classic a unique and infectious energy. The show’s closing segment also served as its improvisational highlight, as the band took “I’ll Take Another” on a ride, shifting from pools of major-key bliss to a Christmas medley that saw Newman gracefully run through both “Silent Night” and “Carol of the Bells” before triumphantly transitioning back into the song’s main theme. The band wasn’t finished when they walked offstage after the monster “I’ll Take Another”, returning for a two-song encore including “Dr. Funk” (which Frye dedicated “to that NY diesel”) and new track “Only Time”.The Main Squeeze continues their east coast run with shows in Hartford, CT and Cambridge, MA this weekend. For more information and to buy tickets to any of their upcoming shows, head to their website. first_imgNEW YORK (AP) — Three business partners in a Manhattan-based private equity firm have been charged in a high-stakes scheme to use clients’ money to cover fake returns. Federal and state authorities said on Thursday that the defendants had raised more than $1.7 billion by creating an “aura of success.” New York officials were seeking $700 in restitution for 1,400 investors. Progress reported at WHO meeting on virus sharing

Posted by admin    /    jtejzywlantv

first_imgDec 15, 2008 (CIDRAP News) – A World Health Organization (WHO) group that met last week in Geneva to solve problems related to global sharing of H5N1 avian influenza viruses made progress on language spelling out the commitment to sharing both the viruses and benefits, a senior US government official told CIDRAP News. The Intergovernmental Meeting on Pandemic Influenza Preparedness (IGM) wrapped up 6 days of sessions on Dec 13 with a plan to meet again just before or during the WHO’s World Health Assembly in May 2009, according to the government official. The official, who requested anonymity, said the group still has several difficult issues to address.Representatives from more than 100 countries participated in the negotiations, and the meeting was attended by a host of observers, nongovernmental organization representatives, and industry groups.Topics for the next meeting will likely include difficult intellectual property (IP) issues related to virus-sharing and agreements on and mechanisms for sharing virus samples and ensuring benefits for countries that provide their viruses, the official said.Last week’s meeting was the IGM’s third attempt to resolve H5N1 virus sharing issues. In early 2007, Indonesia—the country that has been hit hardest by the virus—announced that it had ceased sharing virus samples with the WHO. The aim of the move was to protest what Indonesia regarded as its lack of access to vaccines and treatments made from the virus by companies in more developed nations.Indonesia has pushed for global virus-sharing policies it considers more transparent and fair to developing nations. The IGM first met in November 2007, and Indonesia and the United States recently have had bilateral talks to help clarify some of the issues, the US official said. While continuing to withhold samples, Indonesia started sending genetic sequences of its H5N1 viruses in May to a new public database, the Global Initiative on Sharing Avian Influenza Data (GISAID), which was formed in 2006 by a group of 70 scientists and health officials to ease the sharing of H5N1 sequences. Anyone can use the database if they register and agree to share and credit the use of others’ data, analyze findings jointly, publish results collaboratively, and not push IP rights issues that relate to diagnostic, drug, and vaccine developments. The senior US official said the key element in IGM’s progress last week was shifting away from discussing voluntary versus mandatory virus sharing and focusing more on a commitment to sharing. “Putting the debate into a different context was conducive,” the official said, crediting the US and Indonesia for their work on a compromise.A statement on the meeting results has not yet been posted on the WHO’s Web site, but Intellectual Property Watch, a nonprofit IP news publication and service, reported today that the breakthrough text connecting sharing with benefits reads, “Recognize that member states have a commitment to share on an equal footing H5N1 and other influenza viruses of human pandemic potential and the benefits, considering these as equally important parts of the collective action for global public health.”Participants asked the WHO to work on several technical issues before the next IGM session, according to IP Watch. They include a mechanism for virus tracking, terms of reference for the WHO’s collaborating centers, revisions to the material transfer agreement technical section, and the needs, priorities, and financing options for virus-sharing benefits.Siti Fadilah Supari, Indonesia’s health minister, addressed the meeting on Dec 8, the IGM’s opening day, according to a press release from the ministry that was sent to reporters. In her remarks, she recommended that the WHO consider an offer from GISAID to allow member states to use a new tracking system that it has developed to complement its new influenza sequence database. Some of the difficult IP issues that remain include defining what material may be patented and spelling out the benefits that a source country or researcher can gain in return for providing virus samples, IP Watch reported.See also:Background materials on Dec 8-13 WHO meetingMay 18 CIDRAP News story “Experts welcome Indonesia’s vow to share H5N1 data”GISAID Web sitelast_img read more

Tokyo 2020 logo satire pulled after furor

Posted by admin    /    jtejzywlantv

first_imgA media association has withdrawn its coronavirus-themed parody of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics logo after the local organizing committee called it offensive and a violation of copyright. The Foreign Correspondents’ Club Japan had published on its website and in-house magazine a design adding protrusions to the circular Olympics logo in imitation of a COVID-19 particle.”It’s very offensive … when you consider the people of the world who have suffered from the coronavirus,” the Tokyo 2020 Organizing Committee CEO Toshiro Muto told reporters on Thursday. He said it was an infringement of copyright but did not threaten legal action. The press club quickly removed the design and apologized.”We would like to express our sincere regrets to anyone who may have [been] offended on all sides of this issue and to anyone who lost someone, let me express the deepest condolences,” said club president Khaldon Azhari. The Olympics have been postponed until July next year due to the coronavirus, which has killed about 800 people and infected 17,000 in Japan, though now doubts are growing over that timetable due to the protracted pandemic.Azhari, speaking to media also on Thursday, said legal experts had advised the club would not have a strong case on the copyright issue and anyway did not consider it appropriate to enter a dispute during the pandemic. Decision on his participation for Monday’s match at Sheffield United will be made in the forthcoming days.’Reiss Nelson, meanwhile, will be unavailable until November at the earliest following the knee injury he picked up against Standard Liege, while several of Arsenal’s international contingent are not expected to report back for duty until tomorrow.Monday’s opponents, meanwhile, have made an impressive start to life back in the top flight, holding Chelsea to a 2-2 draw at Stamford Bridge and coming as close as anyone to halting Liverpool’s record breaking winning run.More: Arsenal FCArsenal flop Denis Suarez delivers verdict on Thomas Partey and Lucas Torreira movesThomas Partey debut? The company’s average realized gas price was $6.05 per thousand cubic feet, representing an increase of 15.9% YoY, mainly due to the increasing percentage of sale volume of high-price in project offshore China and the rise of benchmark gas prices overseas.During the period, the company made five new discoveries and drilled nine successful appraisal wells. Auckland Council raids hit 50 brothels

Posted by admin    /    jtejzywlantv

first_imgNZ Herald 19 July 2012About 50 residential brothels in the central Auckland area have been raided in the past year after 95 complaints were made to the Auckland Council. Council resource consents manager David Oakhill said the complaints related mainly to breaches of district plan rules, such as brothels operating in residential areas. “A number of these complaints were found to be well-founded and we took appropriate action, either to close the operation or ask the operator to formalise the activity through resource consent,” said Mr Oakhill. He said police were called during six of the raids after the operators refused to let council officers on to their properties…. The Prostitutes Collective says the raids are turning more prostitutes to the streets.http://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=10820548last_img read more

Legalising Cannabis Will Make Road Riskier – Even With Testing

Posted by admin    /    jtejzywlantv

first_imgMedia Release SayNopeToDope NZ 31 July 2020The SayNopeToDope Campaign is warning that legalisation of cannabis will make our roads more unsafe, and roadside drug testing will do little to mitigate these harms.“The rights of people to be safe on the road outweighs the right to get high. If a person has THC in their system, we don’t want them on the road endangering other drivers and families. The international research is clear on the harm that legalisation of cannabis will bring to our roads,” says SayNopeToDope campaign spokesperson Aaron Ironside. In Canada, a quarter of Canadians aged 18 to 34 have driven after consuming cannabis or been a passenger in a vehicle driven by someone under the influence of cannabis, in a new survey released in December (2019) by the Canadian Automobile Association (CAA). 86% of young Canadians said it is important to find alternative ways to get home when they drink alcohol, but only 70% of them believe it is important to do so after using cannabis. In a study done in New Zealand by six Australian health researchers, it found that habitual users of marijuana have about 10 times the risk of car crash injury or death compared to infrequent or non-users. Those users who crashed had smoked marijuana within three hours of their accidents.”A study in 2017 by the University of Waikato found that nearly half of Kiwi cannabis users don’t think twice about driving after smoking, and that while nearly three-quarters (73.6%) of drinkers had made a decision not to drive after drinking, only 57% of cannabis smokers had made the same call. And while many factors contribute to pedestrian fatalities, it turns out that US states that legalised marijuana for medical and/or recreational use saw a 16.4 percent surge in such deaths in the first six months of 2017 compared to the first six months of 2016, while nonlegal states saw a drop of 5.8 percent in pedestrian fatalities over the same time.Since recreational marijuana was legalised in Colorado, marijuana related traffic deaths increased 151%, more than doubling from 55 in 2013 to 138 people killed in 2017. The percent of traffic fatalities that involved drivers intoxicated with marijuana in Colorado rose by 86% between 2013 and 2017, with over one-fifth of all traffic fatalities involving a driver testing positive for marijuana by 2017.According to AAA, Washington State experienced a doubling in drugged-driving fatalities in the years following legalisation. The number of fatally injured drivers positive for marijuana in the state more than doubled following marijuana legalisation, reaching 17% in 2014. The latest AAA Foundation research (2020) found that between 2008 and 2012 – the five-year period before the drug was legal – an estimated 8.8% of Washington drivers involved in fatal crashes were positive for THC. That rate rose to 18% between 2013 and 2017. In Massachusetts, marijuana is the most common drug found in drivers involved in fatal Massachusetts crashes. Cannabis was found in 175 — 31% — of the 572 drivers involved in fatal crashes from 2013 to 2017, according to the Executive Office of Public Safety and Security.Nick Leggett who is the CEO of the Road Transport Forum recently wrote in transporttalk: “Already the number of people being killed by drug impaired drivers on New Zealand roads is higher than those killed by drivers above the legal alcohol limit. There have been years and years of media campaigns to stop people drinking and driving, but still they do it. So, what is planned to educate people on taking drugs and driving? Higher risk on the roads automatically means higher insurance premiums across the board – insurance is risk priced and you pay on probability… We don’t want New Zealand’s truck drivers, who are just going about their work delivering all New Zealanders the goods they need, to be the casualty of poorly thought out laws.” READ MORE https://saynopetodope.org.nz/driving-stoned/last_img read more

Cazorla dismisses Atletico link

Posted by admin    /    jtejzywlantv

first_imgArsenal midfielder Santi Cazorla has quashed speculation that he is heading for the exit door at the Emirates stadium. However, the 28-year-old, who is enjoying the final days of his extended summer holiday before joining up with his club for pre-season training, has reaffirmed his commitment to Arsene Wenger’s side. He told reporters: “There has been a lot of speculation about a move to Atletico Madrid but I’m very happy at Arsenal, I have a contract there and I start training on Monday. “Perhaps I will return to Spain one day, but right now it’s very unlikely.” Atletico’s most significant signings this summer have been Leo Baptistao, who joined for around 7m euros (£6m) from Rayo Vallecano, and David Villa, who arrived from Barcelona for an initial 2.1m euros (£1.8m). Although Cazorla stressed he was not about to link up with his Spain team-mate Villa at the Calderon, he said he was pleased for him. “I’m very happy for Villa, because he had a difficult year with Barcelona due to his injury [a broken leg he suffered in December 2011], but now he’s got another chance to shine again,” he said. And he declared to work extra hard this year for Arsenal so he can be guaranteed a place in Spain’s squad for next year’s World Cup in Brazil, after missing his country’s triumph in South Africa due to a back injury. He said: “I still have unfinished business in the World Cup after missing the last one because of my back. I really want to experience a World Cup, so I have to have a great year with Arsenal. I hope this year is even better than the last.” The Spain international has been linked with a return to his home country, with Atletico Madrid believed to be prepared to launch a bid for him. Atletico coach Diego Simeone has not denied that his side were interested in Cazorla, who joined the Gunners last summer from Malaga for £15million, commenting last week that “anything is possible” when asked about the midfielder. center_img Press Associationlast_img read more
