John Mayer Releases First Song Since 2014 [Listen]

Posted by admin    /    vtuctqxvrymq

first_imgWatch Mayer play the new track and discuss it in the following live video: After a two year layoff since his last single, “XO”, was released, John Mayer revealed last week that he would release a new single called “Love on the Weekend” today. The Dead & Company guitarist has spent the last few months working on his own music, and surprised fans with the announcement through his personal Instagram account. The details were scarce until yesterday, when Mayer posted that the new song will be premiered today at 4PM ET through Facebook Live, and that he would be answering some questions too.So, here we are. It’s an hour before 4PM, and the song is already available for listen on Spotify. A tweet from Mayer on October 19th revealed that he would be “comin’ back” to Pop Music. This new track is a testament to that sentiment. The 3:32 song stays within the confines of a pop tune and features no drifting solos, something that his most recent fans might crave.Listen to “Love on the Weekend” below:In one of his most recent Instagram posts, he explained that he “took a pass of a solo just for you…now onto the one for the record.” Perhaps this is the guitar solo pass of which he was referencing. Fingers crossed that this means the solo record is coming soon along with more of the blues hand we all know and love.last_img read more

Tri-campus community starts spreadsheet for students in need after schools announce closures due to coronavirus

Posted by admin    /    vtuctqxvrymq

first_imgIn 1906, a great fire and earthquake rattled San Francisco. Reflecting on the experience, the famed writer Jack London wrote: “Never in all San Francisco’s history, were her people so kind and courteous as on this night of terror.” Over a century later, communities all over the world are struggling to contain the COVID-19 pandemic. Late Wednesday morning, University President Fr. John Jenkins sent an email notifying the Notre Dame community in-person classes would be cancelled for at least month as a safeguard against coronavirus, joining dozens of other colleges and universities. Saint Mary’s and Holy Cross soon issued similar announcements. The majority of students will not have permission to stay on campus while the tri-campus dorms are closed. In response, members of the community have amassed resources on a Google Sheet to help students who may need help making the transition.Diane Park | The Observer The sheet was started by Notre Dame sophomore Matthew Bisner, who said he was inspired from students at Washington University who began a similar document after their school closed. Bisner was on a trip for his civil rights Social Concerns Seminar when the University announced it was shuttering its doors. When he first heard the news, he said he began to wonder how low-income students would be affected. “I wanted to make sure that students had safe, affirming and affordable housing and transportation options,” Bisner said in a text.He got to work on the spreadsheet Wednesday evening. From housing and transportation to food, the spreadsheet now lists various means by which students impacted by the cancellation can accommodate their needs. It also contains a section about relevant updates about Notre Dame’s coronavirus response and contacts for students who may need University assistance in the transition. Anyone may contribute to the sheet, and it is open to all members of the tri-campus community.Notre Dame has said it would contact students who are unable to return home and grant them exemptions to stay on campus. Saint Mary’s told students who may need to stay on campus to contact interim vice president for student affairs Linda Timm. Holy Cross students who were concerned about finding housing with residence hall closures were encouraged to contact dean of students Andrew Polaniecki.Bisner said the faculty and staff accompanying students on his trip were among the first to volunteer their support for students who may need additional resources or housing alternatives. For example, associate teaching professor Margie Pfeil said she could feed students at South Bend’s Catholic Worker House, and advisor of restorative justice Susan Sharpe said she could provide housing. The spreadsheet began its rounds on social media Friday. Students and alumni shared it on Twitter, and Tom Bisner, Matthew Bisner’s father, posted it in a Facebook Group for class of 2022 parents.Members of the Notre Dame community quickly pitched in. As of Saturday, six had offered housing; five offered transportation; two offered food; and two monetary support.Bisner said the myriad of people helping with this initiative are “examples of generosity and concern” in the Notre Dame community.Senior Colleen Ballantyne said she first saw the spreadsheet on the Black Sheep Notre Dame Twitter account. Ballantyne listed her name in the Transportation section of the document, offering to give fellow students a ride home to the general North Ohio and West Pennsylvania region Sunday.“I knew I am fortunate enough to have my own car and therefore easy and cheap transportation,” Ballantyne said in a text. “I know a lot of people have been frantically trying to find ways home, and I wanted to do my part to help them.”Similar to Ballantyne, Julia Guillot, a Notre Dame parent, learned about the initiative through the Facebook group. She is offering students funding for traveling and opening up her home in Louisiana.“I know that students are on a budget and that some international students are not able to return home, so I really want to help them however I can,” Guillot said.Guillot said such demonstration of camaraderie characterized the Notre Dame community.“I absolutely believe that Notre Dame is a family,” Guillot said. “Literally, there’s no stranger within the family. We all help each other out.”Initiatives like Bisner’s demonstrate that crises can serve to bring out the best in people, Ballantyne said.“I think it really shows how the notre dame/south bend [sic] community whether students, alumni or residents of South Bend are willing to help out when people are in need,” she said in a text. “We see it throughout the year with various service projects and fundraisers. The difference this time [is] our own community is the group that is in need. We are all hurting right now but we are also all willing to step up to help each other.”According to Bisner, the spreadsheet will continue to evolve as undergraduate and graduate students’ needs change approaching the University’s closure Tuesday.“Please, if you’re able to help, put your contact information in the sheet,” Bisner said in a text. “If you’re in need of support, let us know on the Support page and watch out for new announcements on the Updates page.”Tags: Alumni, Catholic Worker House, Center for Social Concerns, coronavirus, Facebook, South Bend, Twitterlast_img read more

Refiling fee imposed on civil cases

Posted by admin    /    vtuctqxvrymq

first_img Refiling fee imposed on civil cases Although the most funding changes associated with the state taking over more funding of the trial courts won’t go into effect until July 1, 2004, one begins this July 1 and will affect parties filing to reopen civil cases. In a move to provide some transition funding for court clerks, the legislature has imposed a $50 fee for reopening a closed civil case. The levy was in HB 133A, passed by the legislature in its first special session to begin the transition in Article V funding that was mandated by Revision 7, the 1998 constitutional amendment approved by voters.Fred Baggett, who represents the Florida Association of Court Clerks before the legislature, said the fee came out of the legislature’s desire to have all court-related functions of the clerks paid for by fees, rather than state funds. It also came from a recognition that the state needed to stockpile some money to prepare the clerks for the July 1, 2004, funding switch.Clerks, who during their June 16-18 meeting in Orlando devoted a day to discussing the new levy, are concerned that lawyers may not get the word in time and consequently may run into problems when they file paperwork to reopen a case.Studies have shown that only about a third of clerk’s court support functions are being paid for by fees, Baggett said, with the rest being made up by counties. That county support will end on July 1, 2004, and HB 113A lists a variety of fees and charges to be levied by clerks to make up for that shortfall. But, he added, it will take time for money from those levies to flow into the clerks’ coffers. So the state imposed the reopening fee this year to have money available next July to keep the clerks going financially. Estimates from Senate staff are that the fee will raise $18 to $20 million in the next year, Baggett said.“Reopening a case is no expense to the litigant as far as the clerk’s office is concerned, but for the clerk’s office it’s like opening a whole new file,” he said. “If we didn’t do this, the money would have to come from somewhere else.”HB 113A amends F.S. 28.241 by setting the $50 charge for “a party reopening any civil action, suit, or proceeding in the circuit court.” It provides that for the first year, the clerk will retain $1 of the fee to pay for administrative costs, and $49 will be forwarded to the state, where it will go into a trust fund to help with transitional financing next year. The new law also says, “For the purposes of this section, a case is reopened when a case previously reported as disposed of is resubmitted to a court.” Refiling fee imposed on civil casescenter_img July 1, 2003 Regular Newslast_img read more

Patrick Ryder Confirmed as Nassau Police Commissioner

Posted by admin    /    vtuctqxvrymq

first_imgSign up for our COVID-19 newsletter to stay up-to-date on the latest coronavirus news throughout New York Patrick Ryder was sworn in Monday as the new Nassau County Police commissioner after he faced an allegation of sexual harassment before the Nassau County Legislature unanimously approved his appointment.Nassau County Police Commissioner Patrick Ryder.Ryder, who took over as acting commissioner in July after his predecessor retired, vigorously denied the allegation. The legislature stood be the commissioner after hearing that the anonymous claim was investigated since it was received over the weekend.“I did not and I would not degrade a woman ever,” a choked-up Ryder told the panel at the outset of his confirmation hearing. “It is not true.”His promotion despite the allegation stood in contrast to a long list of high-profile men nationwide whose careers were ended after women increasingly began reporting allegations of sexual harassment in the past year. Newsday reported the complainant alleged that Ryder called her “legs.”Newly elected Democratic Nassau County Executive Laura Curran backed her appointment of Ryder despite the claim. So did all 19 lawmakers on the Republican-majority legislature, members of which heaped praise on him before voting the approve his confirmation. Ryder also addressed questions that were raised about his outside consulting business, which he said he would no longer operate while serving as commissioner. It was noted that he sought approval from the county’s ethics board before starting that business.Susan Gottehrer, the director of the Nassau chapter of the New York Civil Liberties Bureau, said Ryder should discontinue the policy of honoring warrants from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, which she argued is conflating undocumented immigrants with violent gang members. “When people don’t trust the police, they stop reporting crime, including MS-13 crime,” she said. “They stop acting as witnesses.”She noted authorities emphasize that they don’t care about the immigration status of crime victims or witnesses, but that undocumented immigrants are less likely to come forward under the current policy of honoring ICE warrants that end in deportation. She also expressed concerns about Ryder’s focus on data that fuels the real-time intelligence policing strategy he spearheaded during his time leading the asset forfeiture unit.Ryder said he is setting up community councils so that he can work more closely with communities across the county. He added that he goes to “painstaking lengths” to ensure the department follows all laws while collecting data and that it will “work closely with ICE under the rule of law.”last_img read more

No contest between society’s well-being and football: Klopp

Posted by admin    /    vtuctqxvrymq

first_img“We don’t want to play in front of an empty stadium and we don’t want games or competitions suspended. But if doing so helps one individual stay healthy – just one – we do it no questions asked,” Klopp added.”Today’s decision and announcement is being implemented with the motive of keeping people safe. Because of that we support it completely.”The message from the team to our supporters is only about your well-being. Put your health first. Don’t take any risk. Think about the vulnerable in our society and act where possible with compassion for them.”  “First and foremost, all of us have to do whatever we can to protect one another. In society I mean. This should be the case all the time in life, but in this moment I think it matters more than ever,” Klopp said in a statement on Liverpool’s website.”I’ve said before that football always seems the most important of the least important things. Today, football and football matches really aren’t important at all.”If it’s a choice between football and the good of the wider society, it’s no contest.”The Premier League considered holding matches in empty stadiums but after Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta and Chelsea winger Callum Hudson-Odoi tested positive for the virus, it held an emergency meeting on Friday and suspended the league. Liverpool manager Juergen Klopp said on Friday football was no longer a priority amid the coronavirus outbreak and society must do all it can to put health first and look after people. The Premier League became the latest high-profile competition to announce a suspension as the pandemic continued its shutdown of world sport, with the English top-flight suspended until April 4.Liverpool need six more points to seal the league title but, with the number of people worldwide infected by the virus climbing to nearly 135,000 and killing more than 4,900, Klopp said playing football was not an option.center_img Topics :last_img read more

Indonesia repatriates 91 smuggled animals from Philippines

Posted by admin    /    vtuctqxvrymq

first_imgNinety-one endangered animals endemic to Indonesia that had been smuggled to the Philippines have returned to their home country.Comprising reptiles, mammals and birds, such as wallabies, cassowaries and Papuan blyth’s hornbills, the animals arrived at Bitung Port in North Sulawesi on Thursday morning. The Environment and Forestry Ministry’s law enforcement director general, Rasio Ridho Sani, Bitung Mayor Maximilian J. Lomban and North Sulawesi Natural Resources Conservation (BKSDA) head Noel Layuk Allo welcomed them upon their return home. Rasio said in the statement that the ministry’s biodiversity conservation director, Indra Exploitasia Semiawan, who also serves as the CITES Management Authority in Indonesia, had been working to repatriate the animals.“A court in the city of Mati in Davao ordered in October 2019 the return of 134 animals to Indonesia,” Rasio said. While both countries agreed on the repatriation, only 91 animals were considered fit for a journey to Indonesia. He went on to say that the Indonesian government had been investigating several animal trade operations, including sales made online.“The ministry is cooperating with several other countries and Interpol to curb this transnational crime. We have uncovered more than 300 cases involving the illegal trade of endangered species,” Rasio said.According to the 1990 Natural Resources Conservation Law, anyone found guilty of trading endangered animals and plants can be sentenced to a maximum of five years and prison and required to pay a fine of Rp 100 million (US$6,934).Topics : “The animals will stay at the Tasikosi Animal Rescue Center in Bitung before eventually being released in their natural habitats,” the ministry’s law enforcement directorate general spokesperson, Dodi Kurniawan, said in a statement.Philippine authorities had confiscated the trafficked animals, which are considered endangered under the Convention of International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES), on April 2019.SunStar Philippines reported at the time that Davao’s Department of Environment and Natural Resources had rescued 300 species of wild animals.Local law enforcers also arrested two men for allegedly smuggling the animals from Indonesia and Papua New Guinea by sea.last_img read more

Swiss legislator removes barriers to individualised high earner pensions

Posted by admin    /    vtuctqxvrymq

first_imgThey can only be introduced for people who earn more than 4.5 times the minimum wage for the mandatory second pillar pension as there are no guarantees on the pension payouts and individuals have to decide on an investment strategy.Only few companies with higher earners have so far set up such plans, mainly because some legal uncertainties remained, including the question of guarantees on accrued assets in case of transfer to another pension fund (under the “Freizügigkeits” law).PricewaterhouseCoopers commented that the newly approved exemption from guarantees meant companies may now be able to report their 1e-plans as pure defined contribution plans in their balance sheets under IFRS accounting rules.“The guarantee was one of the main barriers to treating 1e-plans as defined contribution plans,” Adrian Jones, director at PwC Switzerland, told IPE. “The change in the law will encourage a lot more companies to set up these plans for higher earning employees as the accounting becomes simpler. “These plans also make individual buy-ins more attractive as the employees have a choice over where their money is invested,” he added. From 1 October 2017, when the amended legal framework comes into effect, providers will be able to offer up to 10 different investment strategies but one of them has to be “risk-free”, that is invest  in domestic bonds or cash only. The current regulations did not provide guidance on how many strategies were allowed. An early government proposal for the new regulation had been criticised for specifying that only up to three strategies could be offered. The new law also makes clearer what the maximum savings are that an employee can have under a 1e-plan. Companies with these plans may have to revisit their contribution levels.Existing 1e-plans will have to be adapted to the new legal framework by 2019.The government noted in a press release it will continue to work on a “clear and cost-efficient tool” to assess whether a 1e-plan is “adequate” without guarantees and with the possibility of a lower pension payout.Further information about risks and opportunities provided by companies to employees will be checked by the regulator in the future. A long-awaited amendment to Switzerland’s framework for pension plans with individual investment choices has been passed by the country’s government. The law for the so-called “1e plans” now frees providers from having to guarantee certain pension payments, if a member is transferring to another provider. For all other accrued capital in the Swiss second pillar, pension funds have to guarantee a certain level of accrued assets upon a member leaving a pension fund. This makes transfers of members or companies from multi-employer plans very difficult. The 1e-plans, named after the paragraph in the investment guidelines for Swiss Pensionskassen (BVV), had already been introduced in 2006. last_img read more
