It doesn’t appear that there’s a worthy adversary for Valencia High’s boys’ volleyball team, which rolled past its nonleague foes and now is doing so in the Foothill League. The Vikings (16-0 overall, 4-0 Foothill), the Daily News’ top ranked team, swept 10th-ranked Canyon and Saugus this week and takes on Hart on Tuesday. “We’re really confident,” Valencia senior Teddy Goetz said. “Teams are gunning for us. We know they want to play their best when against us. It’s fun having a target on our backs.” Valencia has won the past five league titles and 47 successive league matches, and it has advanced to the Southern Section Division II final the past three years, winning in 2003 and 2004. “Motivation is not a problem. There’s no letdown in us,” Goetz said. “We have to play our best every game. We know that. We feed off that.” The Vikings could face a challenge at the April 21-22 Santa Barbara tournament and the April 28-29 Redondo Beach Tournament, traditionally two of the more competitive showcases in Southern California. “We’re not thinking too much about those tournaments, but we will get a better understanding of what type of team we are after them,” Valencia coach Mark Knudsen said. “We’re going to get to see some the top teams, get a look at potential future matchups.” The Vikings also will face St. John Bosco of Bellflower, the top-ranked team in Div. I, on May 5th. “To be the best, you have to play and beat the best,” Goetz said.
